Basel – Bad Säckingen, 48km

It was 4°C and pouring! According to the weather forecast the possibility of rain was going to drop to 40% from midday, so we decided to get wet and cold walking around Basel rather than cycling in the morning – and we did get wet and cold! First time I used a hairdryer for a while (for the waterproof jacket).

Had to have left the hotel by 12:00, which we dutifully managed, just. Set off cycling in the drizzle, Phil was wearing six layers! The bike path along the Rhine is really good and well signposted. In the beginning we passed a lot of (pharma) industry, then the views got more rural.

The colours around us were wonderfully autumnal 🙂 We took a break in Rheinfelden to warm up and then continued to Bad Säckingen. Due to being on winter time again, we had to watch out for it getting dark earlier than we were used to.

Bad Säckingen is famous for having the longest wooden bridge with a roof in Europe, which we can actually see from our hotel room.

Today was also fairy tale day and shops were open on a Sunday in Bad Säckingen.

Took us a while to warm up again, but then we comfort ourselves with the thought that other areas not too far away had snow…
